Welcome to Russian Studies!
As part of International & Area Studies in Arts & Sciences at Washington University, Russian Studies is a small, friendly program offering students personalized advising and a wide variety of courses from which to choose. Through two interrelated tracks--Russian language and courses in English translation—our program provides entry into the fascinating and dynamic world of Russian culture.
In our fun interactive Russian language classes, students enjoy lots of individual attention as they work towards high levels of competence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Classes are structured so that students can master the essentials of Russian grammar and engage meaningfully with authentic Russian language materials that convey a rich cultural tradition and an up-to-date picture of everyday life. With this comprehensive, communicative approach, we prepare students to use Russian in various personal and professional settings.
Courses in English are designed both for students who will pursue a Russian concentration and for those who may take only one or two of our offerings. They do not require knowledge of Russian, and many have no prerequisites. In stimulating discussion-based classes, students work closely with faculty to explore important aspects of Russian history, literature, music, popular culture, and contemporary politics.
In addition to academics, we invite all students to join the Russian Club. Events include scheduled speakers, film viewings, nights-out at local Russian eateries, holiday parties, and round-table discussions of current events. Most of these events are bilingual, and we encourage any student interested in Russian culture to attend. Keep checking this Web site for information on upcoming events!
