39 101D (Fall) /102D (Spring) Elementary Russian (5 units)
Interactive multimedia course designed to emphasize spoken language, includes video materials geared toward situations in contemporary post-Soviet Russian life. The course provides thorough understanding of fundamental grammar and develops reading, listening and writing skills. The course is divided into two parts: a master class which meets five times a week and a subsection once a week for conversation and reading.

L39 211D (Fall) /212D (Spring) Intermediate Russian (4 units)
This intermediate course provides an intensive review of basic Russian grammar and oral communication skills with increasing emphasis on reading, writing, culture, and vocabulary. The course features participatory activities, in-class performance of real-life situations, multimedia materials (including videos produced in Russia), and readings from Russian texts. The course is divided into two parts: a MWF master class and a TTH reading and discussion subsection. Prereq: Russian 102 or placement by examination.

L39 322D (Fall)/ 323D Third-Year Russian (3 units)
Designed to further develop students' abilities in the contemporary spoken language. Conversational practice encompassing major aspects of daily and cultural life in Russia today is combined with a grammar review. The class meets three times a week. Prereq.: Russian 101/102, Russian. 212D or placement by examination.

*L39 431 (Fall)/ 432 (Spring) Russia Today and Yesterday: Cultural Perspectives (in Russian) (3 units)
On the basis of contemporary literature, official media, popular songs and films, the course examines the ever-changing culture of the Russian people and society. Class discussions and student presentations, daily work with the Internet. The class meets three times a week. Prereq.: three years of college Russian or placement by examination.

*L39 404 (Fall)/405 (Spring) Advanced Russian (3 units)
Further develops students' abilities in topics of general interest: geography, education, politics, ecology, humor, and Russians' perception of America. Students look at these issues from different perspectives and develop and defend their own opinions. Daily work with the Internet. The class meets three times a week. Prereq.: three years of college Russian or placement by examination.
